Heirloom Living Market Lilburn: Stock up on Ancient Awakenings! Market closes at 8:00pm!
The Market closes at 8:00pm this evening!
My Daily Bread does NOT have offerings on the Market this week.
Bruce will be having Open Heart Surgery. My Daily Bread has been with the Market since our opening and they are like extended family. They have consistently provided us with wonderful organic baked goods, blackberries and blueberries in season; have come to the Markets as “Farmer of the Day” and generally gone above and beyond for us. Now we can help them! Please keep Bruce, Dabrielle and their son Brandon in your prayers!
Stock up on Ancient Awakenings this week!
I am absolutely addicted to the Coconut Vanilla/Banana Kefir and the Grape Kefir; Sarah’s favorite is the Orange Peach Mango Water Kefirand the Coconut Vanilla/Banana Kefir and I hope you all have found your favorites as well! Originally when we started with these great folks, their products were being delivered by one of our other Farmers. It hasn’t worked out quite the way we thought it would. In an effort to keep Ancient Awakenings’ products, we had to come up with a ‘work around’! Right now, the best we can do is a once a month delivery which will be the first Market of each month. However, so that we can all stock up on their wonderful fermented products, Dana and Steve do have items listed on Market this week. PLEASE order what you will need until our next delivery on June 2nd! We hope to go back to a weekly delivery at some point, but in the mean time, I am grateful that we can still get their products!

My Daily Bread
Bruce has certainly had some major health challenges the last month and now he faces open heart surgery. The situation is best told by Dabrielle:
“For those who don’t know yet, Bruce is in the hospital awaiting open heart surgery.
He passed out at Suwanee market and fell to the concrete suffering a 4 inch gash to his heat, a concussion, and lots of bruising. When all the confusion was sorted out by the caridologist, he actually had stopped breathing and his defribulator went off 4 times to shock him back.
After a heart cath, they discovered a calcified block directly from his aorta to the large portion of his arterial feed that is 80% blocked and cannot be stinted. The only option is open heart surgery.
They are awaiting the Plavix to leave his system so they can operate. He will have a long road to recovery including a month bed rest and 3 of cardiac rehab.
They are hoping to do the surgery on Monday, but may be able to do it on Friday if things move faster with the Plavix.
Bruce LOVES doing the coops and I know he will miss you all, but he is grounded for awhile.
We will do our best to get back up and running after his surgery.
Meanwhile we covet your prayers.
Blessings,
Dabrielle"
Prayer is powerful and I join in Dabrielle’s request for your prayers for Bruce as well as for Dabrielle and their son, Brandon. I will keep you informed about Bruce’s condition and recovery.

Princeton Farm Fresh: The Market is Open
With yesterday being Mother’s Day, I thought I would share with you about some of our sheep mothers. This year we had our first triplet birth from Lila who is a second year momma. She was ready and willing to nurse all three, but just did not have enough teets to go around. We are supplementing little Teensie with homemade milk to allow her to keep up with her bigger brothers. When we come out to the pasture she runs to us baaaaing about her bottle non stop. We had a new mamma give birth to two boys and reject one of the boys, we kept her with both boys a few weeks in a jug (square paddock just big enough to bond with babies) where she would have a better chance of nursing both of them. One brother (the rejected one) discovered early on that he needed to nurse when his brother was and so he goes in from behind momma to nurse. Very smart little sheep. My last birth was a surprise birth from Gigi who is a yearling that I did not think was pregnant. One day last week we went out to feed Teensie and found a new little ram lamb. Gigi was calling the new baby to her and he was nursing already. I am constantly in wonder over these sheep. How much vigor they have for life, how well they adapt to changing weather and forages of the seasons. How much they have taught me about trusting nature and patience.
See you all on Friday,
Angela

Market News
A special hello to all the mothers out there this week! I hope your families treated you to something a little above and beyond this weekend.
This is by far the busiest time of the year for our farmers. They’re out working in the fields weeding and harvesting the delicate spring veggies, trying to protect them from the daytime heat. It’s a challenge to give them enough cool water and shade to keep the greens crisp during the day when it’s over 90 degrees in the afternoon. At the same time, they’re putting in all the seedlings and seeds necessary to maintain a steady supply of summer veggies for the months ahead. They’re preparing beds, thinning seeds, watching over starts in the greenhouse, doing their best to keep bugs off the new growth, and doing what they can to shelter them from the cool night air. While doing all this, they’re going to the many farmers markets that are all now up and running. Some of them attend three or four markets a week, including ALG. Some of them even more. Wherever you might bump into your local farmers, please give them a thank you fore all their hard work, especially this time of year. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the best thank yous come in the form of a cup of coffee.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
Other Area Farmers Markets
The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and Wednesdays from 11am-2pm in the atrium at St. Mary’s Hospital. They have a website too. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open for the season on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County Farmers Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

DeForest Locally Grown Market News
Welcome to the 2016 season of DeForest Locally Grown. And Thank you again to Forest Run Farm for hosting the Pick up site at their farm on Mueller Road. This year will include Rusty Dog Coffee. Rusty Dog offers small batch roasts of 100% Arabica blends. Bauman’s Natural Meats will also be offering their products on certain weeks beginning soon: Brats, Burger patties, bulk burger and Pork Ribs for the Memorial Weekend holiday. Eggs will be provided by Bauman’s also. When ordering eggs, please put a note in the comment section that you would like a dozen (or two), they must be paid for in cash or check, no CSA veggie punchcards. You are able to purchase an Egg punchcard, please let us know if you need one.
Forest Run Farm will have its first offerings from the fields and hoop house: green onions, leeks, spinach, rhubarb and herbs. In the next few weeks the selection will increase. Forest Run Farm also offers vegetable plants for your garden—all started at the farm and grown organically. They are not listed this week but can be picked up at the Farm on Fridays or at Hilldale Market. The selection of plants will include tomato (slicers, paste and cherry), peppers (hot and sweet), herbs, kale, kohlrabi, and egg plant. Note: Plants can not be purchased using the CSA veggie punchcard.
There are some weeks that we are unsure of what will be ready by Friday’s Farmstand. So, we add the item to our list, but keep the availability at ZERO. It does not mean we are SOLD OUT, it means that we may have some of this after all and you may be able to pick some up at the Farmstand. You can always add a comment to your order for items you are interested in. If available, we can add them to your order.
Orders made this week (Starting Sunday evening till Tues at midnight) can be picked up on Friday at the farm from 4-6pm during the month of May. Then, after Memorial Day, it is extended to 3-6pm.
Note to CSA customers:
1. CSA customers can use their punchcards at the Hilldale Farmers Market on Wed. or Sat. for Forest Run Farm veggie and fruit products, please do not preorder using the online market, but choose items when you arrive.
2. Only Forest Run Farm vegetables and fruit can be paid for with your CSA punch card. Plants, eggs and coffee must be paid for in cash or check made out to Forest Run Farm LLC.
3. The CSA plan is flexible, don’t feel you have to order every week, but be sure to use your punch card before it expires!
4. If you are interested in signing up for a Farmstand CSA share please do so in the next few weeks.
If you are new to this market and have questions, please email farmer@forestrunfarm.com and we will get back to you.
