CSA Farmers Market: Market News (April/May)
FERRIS ORGANIC FARM
We do have flour. Ferris Organic farm has an organic mill, they also grow many of their own grains and use a stone ground mill just like Linda and Lee did from Westwind Mill.
We will be offering 2 and 5 lb bags for now and the variety will be increasing of milled products will be increasing.
Soon we will also have spelt flour as well and multiple mixes.
Linda and Lee are hoping to have their new facility built by Aug and Linda will be back to baking and they will again be milling the flour.
Michigan Organic Popcorn is Here
Yes! We finally have some. Thanks to Ferris Organic Farm.
APPLES ARE GONE
No more apples until September when Almars start harvesting again, the remaining apples are starting to get wrinkly and will be put into hard cider. There will continue to be frozen apple cider.
On a different note Almar Orchard’s pig barn caught on fire. They did lose a few pigs and the local fire departments put out the fire before it had reached the other buildings. Almars store is open usual hours, although they will be busy cleaning up and building a new barn.
Growing Season
Tomatoes are growing and potatoes are being planted. Lots of good things are happening on the farm.
Come visit us, please call 810-688-3192 to schedule a visit. If you want you can help out while your are here.
Suwanee Whole Life Co-op: Roastery Tour & Fry Farm Tour this Sunday!
It’s not to late to join us this Sunday, April 24th to tour JavaGenesis Coffee Roasting and then visit Fry Farm! Looks like another gorgeous Sunday!
This will be an fascinating and educational tour for everyone – coffee drinkers and non-coffee drinkers! The roastery tour will educate you about the complete process that goes into a cup of coffee- from the small family farms that grow the beans to the art and science of roasting. You won’t believe everything that is involved! This tour will start at 1pm at 741 Harry McCarty Road, Unit 102, Bethlehem, GA 30620. The roastery is about 40 minutes from Suwanee.
We’re assuming the roastery tour will take roughly 1 1/2 hours and then we will head to Fry Farm. The farm is about 5 miles down the road at 590 Cross Ln NW Bethlehem, GA 30620. Fry Farm provides the co-op Certified Naturally Grown produce and this is a great time to see the farm since everything is coming up or being planted. The Fry family are such great stewards of their land and I’m so happy you’ll get an opportunity to meet them. Please note this is a walking tour so wear comfortable shoes. They will have a golf cart if anyone can’t walk for long periods of time. In addition, we will see the chickens and do some pole fishing for the kids!
NOTE TO FAMILIES WITH SMALL CHILDREN
Kids are absolutely welcome to both tours and we think want them to have a great experience learning about local foods. At the roastery there will be large sacks of unroasted coffee beans and for little climbers it will be very tempting to climb on top of them. These bags weigh hundreds of pounds and we don’t want anything to happen to your precious children so please make sure they don’t climb the bags.
On the farm, please remember this is a working farm and supervise children at all times. Remain on designated walking paths. The farm has plots with new plantings and we want to make sure they don’t get stepped on. They have chickens on the farm are very friendly and don’t mind being petted but we ask that you make sure your kids are gentle when touching. When we go to the pond to fish please supervise them closely.
We are so happy the kids get this experience but want to make sure they are safe.
Also, weather looks great and should be pretty warm. Don’t forget water and sunscreen.
You can either reply to this email or RSVP via the market website. Feel free to invite friends or family!
See you on Sunday,
Nora

Gwinnett Locally Grown: The Market is Open!
The Market is now OPEN until Monday at noon!! Click here to order now!
Hello everyone! Welcome to Gwinnett Locally Grown! We have been absent for a little while, but now we are back and very excited to be able to provide you with some delicious and locally grown food.
Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Luisa Martinez and I am the new market manager here at GLG. I am a new Georgia resident, I moved here from New Jersey about 8 months ago. I came across the Rancho Alegre Farm website way before I even moved to Gwinnett, while researching the area and hoping to find a farmer's market near my soon to be neighborhood. Fast forwad to now, not only did a find a market but I am now also the manager! This is quite a change for me, and I am very excited to be able to share my passion for good food via this platform with you all.
Eating local means eating seasonal, and eating seasonal is great for a few reasons. First, it is cheaper to buy foods that are in season, they will also taste better and will be more nutrient dense.
Please browse through the market, see the great variety of fruits and vegetables being offered this week!

Did you know…
In Romania’s Apuseni Mountain’s, the historic community of Rosia Montana (20 minutes from Cami’s home town) have been resisting plans to build Europe’s largest gold mine for over a decade. If built, the mine would level four mountains, raze 900 homes, displace 2,000 subsistence farmers and produce 196.4 million tonnes of cyanide polluted waste. Following the community’s struggle to stop the plans of Canadian multinational Gabriel Resources, In Defence of Life takes us behind the scenes of a landmark European struggle and a globally significant victory for civil society. Having admitted defeat, Gabriel Resources is filing to sue the Romanian Government for over $4billion in damages.
See this video called In Defence of Life about this and several other places on the planet where Canadian and Australian mining cos are making life very difficult for local peoples. The Romanian piece starts at 16:30 or so.
