Heirloom Living Market Hamilton Mill:  Countdown to Close...get your orders in before 8:00pm!

The Market closes Monday at 8:00pm!

Strawberries and Asparagus are available this week! Don’t miss the opportunity – they won’t be around for long!

Welcome ‘Ancient Awakenings’!

Check out their offerings under Fermented Foods…

Thank you to those who have already placed orders! Some items may have been added if you ordered early; be sure and check out the Market Weekly Specials from Heritage Farm. They are listed at the top of the Market listings!

Please remember that minimums must be met for each Market to ensure delivery by our Farmers! At the present time we are a little more than 1/2 way to minimum! Be sure and get your order in and thank you for supporting our LOCAL Farmers!

…this and that…

Cedar Rock Dairy has Buttermilk for $5.50/half gallon. If you would like some, please TEXT me at 404-432-4337.

Ricky Brown of Back River Farm is back with us this Spring. His first harvest is Red Russian Kale. Be sure and check it out! Welcome back, Ricky!

Greg Hutchins of Heritage Farm has let me know that chicken will be available next month. He will also be processing Ducks and Turkeys. For those of you who had the pleasure of trying the Turkey Bologna, be advised it will be available again! WoW! I really like the Turkey Bologna and it is a treat to have Lunchmeat with no nitrites! The Smoked Ready-to-Eat Pulled Pork is fabulous and the Canadian Bacon is also one of my favorites!

Doug of Doug’s Garden still has Carrots and is offering them again this week! Per Doug, this will probably be the last week for them because they will start to lose their sweetness. Three different quantities to choose from! These are YUMMY!

Vicky and Steve of Fry Farm are trying something new this year! Veggies Boxes. In addition, this week Vicky has listed: Popcorn, Cilantro, Parsley, 2 types of Watrecress, Red Russian Kale, Lettuce Mix, 2 types of Spinach, Swiss Chard, Tatsoi and Hakurei Turnips. Reading Vicky’s description of Tatsoi last week inspired me to order! Sauteed it with onions and a Granny Smith Apple! YUMMY! Watercress is also interesting. Like Arugula, it is spicy, but not ‘pepper’ spicy! Great addition to salads!

Morris Cleveland of Healing Earth Farm now has 4 sizes of eggs available. Eggs are Organic, from Free Range Hens. These are really flavorful and yolks are orange! Morris is also offering Red Russian Kale this week!

Be sure and check out the Water Buffalo and Alpaca offerings from David and Shalley of Carrell Farms! I love the Alpaca Cranberry Sage and the Sweet Italian Alpaca Sausage.

Veggie Patch Once again this year, The Veggie Patch is offering Herb Seedlings and Vegetable Seedlings. Check out their greens and other produce!

My Daily Bread has their yummy offerings listed on the Market this week.

Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

Today is the last day to file your taxes! I know you are asking, “What does that have to do with local food”? Well in reality not much, but for this farmer, it means that I am almost done with my off farm job and I can go back to full time farming.
In all honesty I probably should not have worked this year, but the financial demands of farming are weighing heavy on me. This is my dream, and my kiddos and husband and have been willing participants in this dream. But, there are days, when farming is hard. The days when an animal dies, or a crop is destroyed that the uncertainty of farming becomes a reality. When I took this job in October of last year, I was feeling just that – uncertainty. Can I really do this and make a profit? Even more importantly- can I do this alone, as my kiddos get older and are heading out for their own lives?
Oh yea of little faith – keeps running through my head. I guess I lost that faith momentarily. It is hard farming! It is a challenge EACH and EVERY day. It is what I love about it, something new and vibrant everyday. I guess it took being off the farm for me to realize that I have to stay the course, have faith and believe in myself and the dream.
I have five more days of tax duty and then I will be back full time. I miss seeing ya’ll at the farmers market.
See you soon,
Angela

Market News

I’ve gone through all my notes, and don’t really have anything to include for this week’s email. I can’t even complain about the weather, and looking back through the history, that’s the bulk of what I write about during the spring. The days have been beautiful, and that’s keeping our growers as busy as the bees that are racing to find all the wildflowers. So, with nothing more to say, I’ll just let you get right on to ordering from this week’s bounty.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market opens this coming Saturday. You can find more information on their website. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open for the season on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County Farmers Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org The other area markets are also all closed for the season, I believe. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Champaign, OH:  The Circle Game

Yesterday a child came out to wonder…
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar…
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star…
And the seasons they go round and round…
And the painted ponies go up and down…
We’re captive on the carousel of time…
We can’t return we can only look behind
From where we came…
And go round and round and round…
In the circle game…
(Circle Game-Joni Mitchell)

The Circle Game…of life, of love, of rebirth, of the seasons…

Today was such an amazing day of sun, readiness for planting the new, anticipating what is ahead for all of us, the upcoming months of production, and the rejoicing in all that love brings.

Today, I took my convertible out for a drive. I do this, a lot, in the warm months. It clears my head, it lets me look at passing fields, passing people, passing houses, with an up close view. It lets me think, plan, regroup.

So, it was perfect when I stopped for a minute, and saw a loving text from one of our little local market of love vendors…

You know her as your soap girl, ELM Tree Essentials, Laura Miller…she was letting me know that she, her husband, and family welcomed their new baby, Hallie Jo, into their family!! Hallie Jo was born, yesterday, and weighed 7lb. 10oz! Everyone is doing well, and they are all over the moon in love with her!!

As our market family grows, we continue to welcome new additions, new little loves, new growth…

Congrats to Laura and family!

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
