Augusta Locally Grown:  THE ON-LINE MARKET IS OPEN AT AUGUSTA LOCALLY GROWN!N

WHAT A STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL MAY DAY!
Thanks again to those who braved the Benderdinker last weekend despite the super soggy conditions. Your support makes a world of difference to our
programs year-round.

Speaking of programs …

SAT-SUN, MAY 2-3 – ICEBOX MINISTRIES’ “MAY DAY PLAY DAY” – There are amazing things happening in local foods on Fenwick Street in Harrisburg. At the center of it are the good folks of Icebox Farm & Icebox Ministries and other partners of G.R.O.W. Harrisburg. Come join us for a two-day renovation of an old florist shop at the new urban garden campus. We’ll use it as a teaching kitchen for the FVRx this summer. Okay, so this might sound like more of a “work day” than a “play day” … but believe me … it’s all fun. Work starts at 9am each day and goes til we’re exhausted. Painting, flooring, gardening, hole digging, and general cleaning up. Bring work gloves, a water bottle and a machete – to chop down bamboo – if you’ve got it. Lunch will be provided both days for all volunteers! Text Kim at 706-288-7895 to sign up and get the address.

SAT-SUN, MAY 2-3 – LOW DOWN THROW DOWN – Honored and flat out stoked that ALG has been selected as the nonprofit beneficiary of the Soul City Sirens Roller Derby tournament this May Day weekend. Come throw a few back, get in touch with your inner queen and support the local foods movement. Proceeds will go to our FVRx program for women and their children. Tourney runs 8am-8pm, both days, at the Columbia County Exhibition Center in Grovetown. Visit soulcitysirens.com for a schedule. And text Kim if you can cover a few hours of our promo booth as a volunteer: 706-288-7895.

SAT, MAY 2 – SOUTHERN MADE, STORE GRAND OPENING – Congratulations to three local farmers for announcing the grand opening of their new fiber arts store “Southern Made” on Sat, May 2, 10am-5:30pm. Located at 1808 Broad Street, Augusta. Come see what it’s all about with Hard Earth Farm of Modoc, SC, Phoenix Farm Fiber in Beech Island, SC and Bella Luna Sheep & Wool Farm of Washington, GA.

FRI & SAT, MAY 22-23 – SHADOW BBQ RETURNS! – This local competition bbq team will again compete in “BANJO-B-QUE,” a nationally-sanctioned event in Evans! Better yet, they feature local meats from local farmers while also promoting Augusta Locally Grown. ALG board president Amy Sutter and her hubby Patrick head it all up! Save this date, buy your tickets and GO SHADOW BBQ!!!

SUN, MAY 24 – DINE FROM THE VINE: A VEGAN DINING EXPERIENCE – There’s a new place in town, and they are totally supporting your local farmers. Come experience the vegan event at Humanitree House, located at 230 8th Street, Augusta. Contact Kisha at burket.sc@gmail.com to more details.

SUN, MAY 31 – FAMILY FARM DAY – Come meet your farmers at Clyde’s Fresh Produce in Grovetown. Show up anytime between 2pm-6pm to see the goings on at this bio-diverse local farm. Tasty seasonal samples and young farm animals make it all the more fun. Save the date, and email kim@augustalocallygrown.org to get the address.

MON, JUNE I – RAINWATER WORKSHOP FOR URBAN VEGGIE GARDENS – Join us for another “pop up” food-growing workshop. This one will be held at Bottle Tree Farm in Augusta. Instructors Candace & Nate Zukas will share the nitty gritty details of their own rain barrel system, which waters their beautiful urban farmette. 5:30pm-7pm. $5/person. Tickets go on sale today. This one will sell out fast!

TUE, JUNE 2 – FRUIT & VEGGIE RX – Augusta Locally Grown is truly honored to be a partner in the Fruit & Veggie Rx pilot project, a first-ever for the Southeast! The pilot will be hosted and coordinated by the Harrisburg Family Healthcare clinic, funded and designed by Wholesome Wave Georgia, educationally enhanced by Icebox Ministries, academically enhanced by Emory University, held together by Good Neighbor Ministries/St. Luke UMC, and made real by medical student volunteers from MCG. Augusta Locally Grown is the project’s cheerleader. June 2 is the project’s kick-off date! Your donations would be very much appreciated.

SUN, JUN 14 — BLUEBERRY PICK YOUR OWN DAY – Grateful to include the farmers at Herb & Berries Farm of Montmorenci, SC, (near Aiken) in our mix. We’ll join forces with them in June to host a pick-your-own morning. Attendance is free; self-picked blueberries cost a 2.50/lb. Come early; beat the heat. More details soon!

THU, JUN 18 – COOLER THAN A CUCUMBER SALAD KIDS COOKING CONTEST … 8 youth, 8 salads, 1 trophy … Do you know a budding young chef between the ages of 10-17? Sign ’em up to compete in this 2nd annual event at the Evans Towne Farmers Market. Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org.

TBA IN JULYBUCKET GARDENING with Stephanie, at Bucket Lady Farm in Augusta!

SUN, OCT 4 — FARM TO PARK DINNER FEATURING CHEF CHARLEEN — Save the date for what will surely be the biggest farm to table event that Augusta’s ever seen! Chef Charleen of Culinary Connections will feature local foods at this Pendleton King Park fundraiser… and ALG will help! Farmers: contact Chef Charleen to feature your special something in this one-of-a-kind event.

Cheers!
Kim

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open and Welcome Kyle!

Good Morning Food Club,

The market is open and ready for ordering!

I’m also SO excited to give a big Food Club welcome to our brand new Program and Market Manager, Kyle Holton! Kyle will be replacing Rebecca and myself as staff, but don’t you worry, I still plan on being heavily involved on the ALFN Board. It’s been an honor to serve as Director of Operations for the last year and a half, but it was time for me to find something full-time, and I’m happy to announce I’m the new Grants Foundation Coordinator at the Arkansas Foodbank. Anyways, I really am excited to welcome Kyle, and I know you all will be too. Thanks for all that you do to support small, sustainable, Arkansas farms.

Sincerely,

Alex Handfinger

Thanks for the introduction Alex. I’m elated to be joining the ALFN community this year, and I look forward to meeting all of our growers, cooks, foodies, locavores, and the general hungry human. Look for me next Saturday at pick up; I’d love to meet you. For most of my adult life, my family and I ate from a local food market in Mozambique as we worked for a local non-profit. I learned to understand the human and biological roots of my own survival. From my perspective, eating food cultivated by our regional neighbors grounds our taste buds. ALFN is one of those wonderful organizations that help reestablish the connection between food and local economies.

After you’ve filled the belly of your food plans this week, check out the online nursery of plants available. Spring is in full force, and we have a number of locally germinated heirloom veggies, herbs, flowers and even some fruit trees. We’ve got everything from Arkansas Traveler Tomatoes to Pineberry Strawberries to ‘Aureus’ Hops to Buddha’s Hand Citron trees. Buy a plant, get dirt under your fingernails, and green your thumb…you may even find Nirvana in your backyard.

Sincerely,
Kyle Holton

Champaign, OH:  We Are Gonna Be Friends

I can tell that we are gonna be friends…
Yes, I can tell that we are gonna be friends…
(We’re Going To Be Friends- White Stripes)

So many nights, after we close the Thursday portion of the market, I like to kick back, have a nice glass of wine, listen to tunes, and gather my thoughts about the upcoming weekend, the upcoming week, and this market. I always have tunes in the background, wine glass, some sort of dinner groovin’, and many times catching up with friends via Facebook.

Tonight, I got in a bit late, poured a glass of wine, put on some acoustic tunes, and this one popped up. I love the original version of this, I Love when Jack White performs it as a bluegrass, funky acoustic.

Anyway, the story of the lyrics about knowing that the duo with sweet Suzy Lee are going to become the best of friends, makes me think of this little local market of love, the underlying meaning of friendship, of a love for each other, of a lifelong dedication to all that is local. Of a support system of market, vendors, customers, managers, the YMCA…we all come together to bring you such a bond of friendship, of love, that once we all become one with the market, and each other, we cannot let it go.

It’s not just a market. It’s not just about being local. It’s not just about the vendors or the products. It’s a bigger picture. The reason we are all so dedicated, in one way or another.

The trust, the bond, the simplistic lovely friendship of it all. We all share this bond. We are all in this little local market of love…

We are entering into or fourth season. We have grown, we continue to grow, we have no plans on stopping or slowing.

I can tell that we all are gonna be friends. It’s what this market does. It brings us all so close that we are gonna be friends.

I am opening the market, once again, for the upcoming week. Get those orders in! Show us your love, your bond, your friendship…because I can tell that we are gonna be friends…

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…
Cosmic Pam

Suwanee Whole Life Co-op:  Reminder: Place your order today before 5pm!

Per the survey, many of you have requested that I send a reminder on Sundays before the market closes so you’ll remember to order.

I will do my best try to remember to send this weekly on Sundays :-)

Have a wonderful day,
Nora
